المستخلص

It is true that the Sudan had moved perceptibly. The first major achievement was the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on January 9, 2005. This was fol¬lowed by the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement in April 2006. By the first agree¬ment date, the war between the north and the south was terminated even though some social conflicts erupted in different guises. Nevertheless, the various comments that are found in this study still prove their validity in many respects. At the very least, they provide an historical background to the war that had ravaged the country, documenting some of the consequences upon both people and the social institutions that had proved useful in the past. This study was commissioned by the Life & Peace Institute in 1996. Dr. Raphael Badal, professor of Political Science at the University of Khartoum, undertook the research on behalf of the Institute. It forms part of a larger research project in which the Institute has been engaged for some years now. The project consists of studying the various traditional mechanisms of conflict resolution. It arises from the belief that various cultures possess a wealth of traditional meth¬ods that serve them well in the search for peace among conflicting communities. The interesting fact about this study is that even though it was written ten years ago, it is timely in many ways. This is because it does not confine itself to the study of traditional mechanisms. While keeping its main aim in perspective, it also goes far and wide in dealing with other very important issues. - http://www.life-peace.org/default2.asp?xid=457
